November 2003 Archives

There's something quite depressing about people talking to dogs over the phone.
Great documentary on BBC 2 tonight (actually a BBC 4 on BBC 2 slot) about the fantastic Orion spaceship, which would have worked by firing nuclear bombs out of its arse. It could launch 1000 tonne payloads! It could have either saved the human race from destruction or completely obliterated it, depending on which way it was pointed! Also they calculated that between one and ten people would be killed by radioactive fallout every time they launched it!

But pesky Atomik Treaties killed it dead.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuclear_pulse_propulsion has a nice summary, and mentions the SUPER ORION, which could have carried A CITY.

Oh, and Arthur C Clarke wanted to use Orion type spaceships in 2001, but Stanley Kubrick didn't want to get typecast as The Nuclear Director.
